Haint Blue

Haint Blue traces its roots to the Gullah Geechee communities of the American South, where pale blue-green porch ceilings, shutters, and window frames were traditionally painted to ward off haints—restless spirits believed to wander at night. Over time, the color became a defining feature of Southern architecture, spreading from the coastal Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia to homes throughout the South.

Whether chosen for folklore, its resemblance to the sky, or the belief that it discouraged insects, Haint Blue has become an enduring part of the region’s architectural identity. Soft, calming, and unmistakably Southern, it remains a timeless choice for porch ceilings, shutters, doors, windows, and exterior trim.

For best results, pair Haint Blue with Primer #1, our ready-mixed linseed oil primer formulated for lighter tones.

Price range: $8.95 through $195.00

Description

Material & Composition: Made from our local farm-grown flax-derived boiled linseed oil and mineral pigments. No plastics, acrylics, or synthetic binders. The paint penetrates the substrate, helping protect wood from moisture and metal from corrosion while allowing moisture to wick outward. Linseed oil paint will not chip or peel.

Application: Apply in thin coats using a natural-bristle brush, such as our oval hog’s hair paintbrush. The color may appear different in the can—once applied, the tone settles and comes into balance with the primer and surface.

Coverage: Approx. 612–815 sq ft per gallon, per coat—2x greater coverage than conventional paint systems.

System Performance: Linseed oil paint integrates into the surface rather than forming a film, allowing it to age gradually without cracking or peeling while continuing to protect over time.

Maintenance: Maintenance is simple—apply a light coat of boiled linseed oil every 3–5 years on south-facing surfaces, where sunlight is strongest, and approximately every 10–15 years on north-facing surfaces, where UV exposure is much lower. No need to repaint.

Shipping: Ships from our warehouse in New Hampshire.

Warranty: When applied in accordance with the application guidelines to properly prepared and primed surfaces, our linseed oil paint will not blister, peel, or trap moisture. It is backed by a lifetime residential warranty and a 10-year commercial warranty, both valid from the date of application.
