Application Guide
Paint once. Protect for years. A proper beginning for a finish that lasts.
Always stir paint well before each use, carefully mixing in any pigments that may have settled. If there is a skin, remove it before stirring.
We recommend our oval hog’s hair natural-bristle brush for the first and second coat, then our flat finishing ox ear hair natural-bristle brush for the top coat.
Coverage: 612–815 ft² per gallon per coat. That is 2 – 2 ½ times more coverage than acrylic paint.
How to use linseed oil paint
1st Coat - Primer
Use our ready-mixed primer or thin linseed oil paint with 50% paint, 35% raw linseed oil, and 15% balsam turpentine – mix well.
2nd & 3rd Coats - Paint
Start with a thin, light coat and apply small quantities at a time.
The full color will only become apparent after three coats. The more coats you apply, the more sheen you get, but you will not achieve a full-gloss finish.
How to use linseed oil primer
Start with a thin, light coat.
Brush it on in cross-sections so the wood absorbs the oil evenly. Push it into the substrate. You will notice matte and glossy patches, which are useful — they show where the oil has soaked in and where it hasn’t yet.
Drying times vary with conditions, but typically allow 24–48 hours between coats in sunny, dry conditions.
