Restoration of Last-Remaining Victorian Shutters

Brodsworth Hall stands as one of England’s finest surviving Victorian country houses—a Grade I listed building built between 1861 and 1863. The estate presents a rare glimpse into 19th-century domestic life. Yet among its many architectural treasures, one feature stands out for its rarity: its original Victorian window shutters—the last remaining examples of their kind.

Before conservation could begin, English Heritage conducted an extensive investigation into the condition and history of Brodsworth Hall. For the shutters, their research revealed that they are unlike any others in the UK, representing the only surviving set from the Victorian era. English Heritage selected Brouns & Co Linseed Paint for one essential reason: its compatibility with historic woodwork. Unlike plastic-based modern coatings, linseed oil paint behaves exactly as Victorian craftsmen intended.

Linseed oil paint offers a level of protection that modern coatings can’t match, especially when working with historic timber. Instead of forming a surface film that traps moisture—a common cause of decay—linseed paint penetrates deeply into the woodstrengthening it from within. Its moisture-wicking nature allows moisture to escape naturally, helping prevent rot and extending the life of the shutters.

Because many of the slats at Brodsworth Hall had been stripped back to bare timber, they were ideally suited for linseed paint’s self-preserving properties. And with its exceptional longevity, maintenance is minimal; a simple wipe with linseed oil every few years keeps the finish performing beautifully, delivering lasting protection with very little upkeep.

To respect the original appearance of the shutters, English Heritage used our custom colour-matching system to recreate a shade known as Purple Brown—a finish that reflects the Victorian palette and blends seamlessly with the Hall’s façade.

The final result is not only historically accurate but visually stunning, enhancing the building’s authenticity while providing unmatched durability.

During the project, English Heritage also chose to rejuvenate the surrounding mahogany window frames using raw linseed oil, a perfect treatment that provides excellent weather protection. The team applied a blend of 85% Raw Linseed Oil and 15% Balsam Turpentine.
